Born July 24, 1950, he was the eleventh of twelve children born to Francisco Castro and Leonarda (Barraza) Campos in Marfa, Texas. He was married to Sonya Villalobos Campos for 31 years and had three children: Christopher John Garcia, Marisa Alexis Campos Walker and Loretta Marie Campos.
He is now rejoicing alongside his parents; brothers, Dolores and Reinaldo Campos; sisters, Olivia Luna, Betty Gonzales, Edwina Alvarez, Margie Ramirez and Anita Gonzalez.
He is survived by the love of his life, Sonya V. Campos of Rosenberg; his daughters, Marisa Walker of Richmond and Loretta Campos of Waco; his son, Christopher Garcia and his wife Reagan Garcia, of Richmond; his sisters, Janie Tapia and Josie Ramos, both of Odessa; his brother Jose Campos and his wife Elena of Odessa; his two favorite grandchildren, Caleb Joshua and Matthew Aiden Garcia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In 1970, he took a break from the University of Texas El Paso and joined the United States Army. He later transitioned to the United States National Guard from which he would retire as a Staff Sergeant in 1991. He returned to UTEP and completed his Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications in 1974. He came to Houston in 1976 and worked alongside his radio brother Daniel “Dan the Man” Segura for Tejano station KFRD – he was most known as morning show personality “El Gallito Madrugador.” In 1993, he retired from radio and began working for the Department of Health and Human Services from which he would retire in 2013.
He was an active member of his community, volunteering at his church as the audio technician and remaining an active board member of the Fort Bend County Fresh Water district board. In 2014, he returned to work part-time alongside his long-time friend Carlos Garcia at Carlos Garcia Insurance up until his death.
He will be most remembered by his echoing radio voice, his heart of gold and his mesmerizing “Campos smile.” Although he has left a big void in our lives, his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is now at peace – he is now pain-free – he is now dancing and rejoicing in heaven as our newest guardian angel.
