Martha grew up on the northside of Houston in a family where prayer was the response to every problem and miracles happened. Both grandfathers and her father were ordained ministers. Her arm was injured as a girl, and she grew close to God during an extended hospital stay. She left school at age 14 to work at Sakowitz to help support her family. She met Buddy Fuqua at a church singles picnic after he blew spit wads to get her attention. She eloped with him on 8-29-1960.
Martha assisted Buddy with a newspaper distribution business for many years. Later she worked at various Christian bookstores. She also learned floral design while working for a craft store.
Martha was always active in church. She started teaching Sunday School when she was 15 and continued working with kids at church for about 60 years. Martha & Buddy were also the greeters at Glad Tidings Assembly of God church for many years. Martha has always been a prayer warrior, often waking in the night to pray for individuals God put on her heart. In later years, as people shared needs with her, instead of “I’ll be praying for you” she would say “let’s stop & pray now”. Friends and family were her lifeblood, and she was happiest when serving others.
