Mercedes Treviño

Mercedes Treviño of Houston, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at the age of 88. He was born on November 6, 1935, in Arcabuz, Tamaulipas, Mexico, where he grew up happily with his aunt, Romula Treviño, whom he supported by running errands at an early age. He was the oldest of 11 children.

Mercedes attended elementary school from 1942 to 1945, where he was the teacher’s messenger, bringing letters to her boyfriend. He enjoyed his free time working at a nearby river, where he would ferry people from one side to the other in a small canoe for only 20 Mexican cents. Mercedes managed to rent the canoe from someone and start his own “little business.” One of his countless jobs involved constructing a main highway from Monterrey to the international airport. He met his wife, Florinda, in 1956, and they married on July 20, 1957. He raised his children working as a farmer in Guadalupe, Nuevo León, and as a laborer in Valle Hermoso, Río Bravo, and Empalme, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He began coming to the USA in 1975 and was able to bring his family to Houston in December 1978, where he began working as a grinder until he retired. He enjoyed sitting on the front porch and going out for breakfast. He loved eating barbacoa, and his eyes would light up when asked if he wanted a cup of coffee. Mercedes also loved to sing “corridos” and “alabanzas.”

He attended the Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Hispana Central de Houston. He was a responsible husband and provider to his children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, José Luis Treviño Garza and Zoyla Reyna Marroquín, and four of his siblings: María de Jesús, Secundino, José Luis, and San Juana. He is survived by his spouse, Florinda, and their 10 children: Marianela, Marisela, Juan Javier, Marilú, Maribel, María de los Ángeles, Maricruz, Martha Leticia, Jesús Alfredo, and José Mercedes. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Mercedes loved to mention that as a baby, Domingo, one of his uncles, used to try to calm him down when he cried by singing to him, “Por aquí pasó un arroyito de leche,” and he cried harder. So, his uncle would then sing, “Por aquí pasó un arroyito de café,” and he would feel better. Now we know why he enjoyed coffee so much!

Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing at the Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Hispana de Houston on Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 4:00 to 9:00 PM. The church service will begin at 7:00 PM. Viewing will continue on Friday November 1, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Angel Crespo Funeral Home, burial will be at 3:00 pm at South Park Cemetery Pearland, TX.

Mercedes Treviño de Houston, Texas, falleció el martes 22 de octubre de 2024, a la edad de 88 años y en unos días estaría cumpliendo 89 años. Nació el 6 de noviembre de 1935 en Arcabuz, Tamaulipas, México, donde creció felizmente con su tía, Romula Treviño, a quien apoyaba haciendo mandados desde una edad temprana. Mercedes fue el mayor de 11 hermanos.

Mercedes asistió a la escuela primaria de 1942 a 1945, donde era el mensajero de la maestra, llevando cartas a su novio. Disfrutaba su tiempo libre trabajando en un río cercano, donde transportaba a la gente de un lado a otro en una pequeña canoa por solo 20 centavos mexicanos. Mercedes logró alquilar la canoa de alguien y comenzar su "pequeño negocio". Uno de sus innumerables trabajos consistió en construir una carretera principal de Monterrey al aeropuerto internacional. Conoció a su esposa, Florinda, en 1956, y se casaron el 20 de julio de 1957 y desde entonces no se separaron cumpliendo así su juramento en el altar, por 67 años, hasta que la muerte los separe. Crió a sus hijos trabajando como agricultor en Guadalupe, Nuevo León, y como obrero en Valle Hermoso, Río Bravo y Empalme, Tamaulipas, México. Comenzó a venir a EE. UU. en 1975 y pudo traer a su familia a Houston en diciembre de 1978, donde comenzó a trabajar como “graineador” en tanques petroquimicos de acero inoccidable hasta que se jubiló. Disfrutaba sentarse en el porche para cuando sus “pollitos” (amados hijos/as) llegaran a visitarle y salir a pasear. Le encantaban las empanadas de calabaza, comer barbacoa y sus ojos brillaban cuando le preguntaban si quería una taza de café. A Mercedes también le encantaba cantar "corridos" y "alabanzas cristianas".

Asistía a la Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Hispana Central de Houston. Mercedes fue muy responsable como esposo y papá de sus 10 “pollitos”

Se le adelantaron sus padres, José Luis Treviño Garza y Zoyla Reyna Marroquín, y cuatro de sus hermanos: María de Jesús, Secundino, José Luis y San Juana. Le sobreviven su esposa, Florinda, y sus 10 hijos: Marianela, Marisela, Juan Javier, Marilú, Maribel, María de los Ángeles, Maricruz, Martha Leticia, Jesús Alfredo y José Mercedes. También le sobreviven 26 nietos, 31 bisnietos y 1 tataranieta. Teniendo hasta hoy una descendencia directa de 68 personas entre hijos, nietos, bisnietos, y tataranieta.

Mercedes solía mencionar que de bebé, Domingo, uno de sus tíos, intentaba calmarlo cuando lloraba cantándole: “Por aquí pasó un arroyito de leche”, y él lloraba más. Así que su tío cantaba: “Por aquí pasó un arroyito de café”, y él se sentía mejor. ¡Ahora sabemos por qué le gustaba tanto el café!

Familia y amigos están invitados a asistir a la velación en la Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Hispana de Houston el jueves 31 de octubre de 2024, de 4:00 a 9:00 PM. El servicio religioso comenzará a las 7:00 PM. La velación continuará el viernes en la funeraria Angel Crespo a las 11:00 AM y de ahí se procederá a darle sepultura en el panteón Forest South de Pearland a las 3:00PM.
