It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Merlene Virginia (Hester) Archer, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who left us peacefully on May 3, 2026, at the age of 92. Merlene was born on December 7, 1933, in the small town of Hickbaugh, Texas, to V. B. Hester and Ethel Hester. From her earliest days, she radiated a joy and warmth that would come to touch countless lives.
Merlene spent her formative years in Warren, Texas, where she attended school from grades 1 through 8. Even as a child, Merlene displayed a remarkable intellect, tying for valedictorian with a classmate, and graciously accepting the role of salutatorian after a coin toss. Her academic journey continued in Sheldon, Texas, where she attended Crosby Junior and Senior High School, graduating as valedictorian in 1952. Her exceptional scholastic achievements earned her a scholarship to a small women’s college, a testament to her dedication and determination.
In 1953, Merlene began a new chapter of her life when she married the love of her life, Pat L. Archer, on January 16th. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, spanning an incredible 72 years. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and unwavering support, becoming an inspiration to all who knew them.
A woman of many talents, Merlene began her professional career at Prudential Insurance Company straight out of high school. Her skills as a typist were unmatched, making her one of the fastest of her era. In 1959, she paused her career to focus on her family, a role she embraced with the same passion and excellence that defined her professional life. Merlene returned to Prudential in 1983, continuing to contribute her expertise until her retirement in 1994.
Merlene’s legacy is one of love and dedication. She was a gourmet cook, creating meals that brought family and friends together around the table, where laughter and stories were shared. Her family was the heart of her world, and she was the best mother and wife anyone could ask for, offering unwavering support and love to her husband, Pat, and their daughter, Gail Sipps, and son Patrick Archer Jr.
She is survived by her devoted husband Pat, her daughter Gail Sipps and husband Ron Sipps, her son Patrick Archer Jr. and wife Robin Archer, grandchildren Ronnie Sipps, Michael Sipps, Nicole Kraft, Patrick Archer III, Brandon Archer, and Bruce Archer, great-grandchildren Brooke Sipps, Brady Sipps, Harper Sipps, Colt Kraft and Morgan Kraft, and her sister Sue Jackson, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her dearly.
