Michael Eugene Shelton passed away on October 16, 2023. He was born to parents Clede Shelton and Adelia McCarson, on August 9, 1947, in Boling, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Thudoan Shelton, daughter Emily Shelton, son, Matthew Shelton, stepsons Bryan and David, dear and close friend Brandon Adamcik, and preceded in death by his stepson, John.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Lamar University in 1971 and earned his Juris Doctorate degree from South Texas College of Law in 1974. He founded the Shelton Law Firm in that same year. Mike was a Texas native and as a young man worked on cattle farms and oil rigs. His first-hand knowledge of trade labor enabled him to appreciate and understand the steam engine of workers who perform these jobs. He dedicated his practice to representing injured workers and won a vast spectrum of seven figure cases representing union and non-union workers across America. He was able to win difficult cases in large part due to his knowledge of the offshore, pipeline, and construction industries.
At the time of his death, he had almost 50 years of experience in the litigation of complex personal injury cases in Texas, Louisiana, throughout the United States and internationally. He was admitted to the Texas and Louisiana Bar and appeared before the US District for the Eastern, Western and Southern Districts of Texas, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits and the US Supreme Court. He was a member of the Houston and Louisiana Bar Associations and was a life Fellow with the Texas Bar Foundation. Mike also received an “AV” Peer Rating from Martindale Hubbell, the National Directory of Attorneys, which is the highest possible rating indicating preeminent legal ability with the utmost ethical standards.
Mike was committed to all workers and was a member of the United Association Local Union 100 and still held a journeyman pipefitters card. At the time of his death, Mike served as General Counsel for the Texas Building Trades and Dallas Building Council.
While Mike exhibited and performed top-level legal work, he may have been better known as a person for his generous and kind heart. He rarely met anyone he wouldn’t call a friend or lend an open ear. When speaking with Mike, you felt like you were his sole attention and focus. Quick witted and fast with a joke, Mike could always find humor and levity in almost any circumstance.
