May 6, 1927-July 2, 2021
Born on a farm near Holland, Texas, Nannette and her mother moved to Austin when she was around six years old. As a pre-teen, she worked for a Texas representative as a page in the Texas Legislature. She went to Austin High School and worked as a telephone operator after school in the evening until 10 or 11 PM. She would walk a couple of miles home. She paid her own way to attend classes at the University of Texas.
She met her husband Ernest when he returned home from service in the South Pacific. Nannette and Ernest married on July 18, 1947 and were married 74 years. She quit school after they were married and worked at the Texas Highway Department so he could attend U.T. After he graduated, they moved to Snyder, Texas where she worked for Humble Oil and Refining. When they moved to Houston, Nan stayed with Humble in the Engineering Department. In between, she had two great children – Jack and Terri Luker. Later, she worked in real estate in Spring Branch/Memorial area and stood up for poor farmers against crooked attorneys who tried to steal their land.
She was president of the Women’s Organization in her church. She was also active in politics and helped George Bush, Sr., get elected. He sat at her kitchen table at a coffee Nannette had for him, attended by dozens of women. She also worked for the food bank at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She was a loving wife, a wonderful mother of two, a grandmother of six, and a great grandmother of three.
