After many years of struggling with health issues, Nicolas Ybarra Almaraz (Nick) passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on December 18, 2016, at the age of 64. He was born in Brownsville, Texas on December 6, 1952 to Teresa Almaraz.
At the age of 20, he joined the US Army during the Vietnam Era and proudly served our country faithfully and meritoriously with the First Team and was honored and respected as a member of the 1st Calvary Division. He was Honorably Discharged with a rank of Specialist 4 on October 18, 1978.
He worked for Majors Scientific Book Company as a Warehouse Manager with the attitude that everyone could help with any job and his leadership inspired his employees to problem solve with creativity. After the closing of Majors, he joined the Houston Independent School District (HISD) as a Crime Prevention Officer at Fondren Middle School where he enjoyed working with middle school students and was a mentor and father figure to many boys and girls. Due to health issues, he retired in 2009.
Nick always had a good sense of humor, and when he wasn’t cracking jokes with family and friends you could find him working on his favorite hobby building military models, or watching old westerns and crime solving movies. He also relaxed listening to all genre of music or spending time playing with his only grandson. He loved and dedicated his whole life to his family, enjoying every minute of time they spent together.
He was always ready and willing to be the “Good Samaritan” without expecting anything in return. But most of all, he was compassionate toward people, and a God-loving, God-fearing Christian man who was always ready to help the needy as much as he could, even if it meant depriving himself of some basic needs. He will be infinitely missed and remembered by a multitude of people, including all his loved ones who survive him.
He is survived by his loving, caring wife of 42 faithful years, Veronica Ramos Almaraz, his two children, son Nicolas Antonio Almaraz, daughter, Christina Annette Delgado, son in law Kris Delgado and his only grandson Kristopher Michael Delgado. He also leaves behind his mother and 6 siblings as well as loving in laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and a host of longtime friends.
