Partha grew up in a cultured Hindu Bengali family along with his two sisters (Gouri and Lopamudra). He attended English medium schools in Calcutta, graduating with a BSc and MSc in Physics from the University of Calcutta. He left India to obtain a PhD in Physics at Sorbonne University in Paris, France, and subsequently completed postgraduate studies at the University of Southampton, UK. Partha returned to India to teach at Kalyani University. At this time, he married Sucheta Sircar in 1970. Partha is survived by his wife, son, Kanishka, and daughter-in-law, Deepmala.
In a career spanning 40 years, Partha taught physics at universities in India, Canada, and the United States. He was a dutiful son and brother, loving husband, father, and father-in-law. He was a voracious reader, deeply appreciative of both Bengali and classical Western music, a fan of live theater and of arthouse cinema. Partha espoused liberal, progressive values, supporting his wife, Sucheta (PhD in physiology) in her career as a research scientist. He was very close to his son, Kanishka, for whom he made major sacrifices, enabling him to become a physician, and with whom he shared a deep bond of friendship. Fluent in three languages, Partha was fortunate to travel within India with his students, across North America and Europe with his wife, son, and later, his daughter-in-law. Partha was polite, gracious, and unassuming, qualities that endeared him to practically everyone with whom he came into contact. We honor him for the man that he was and for the way that he lived his life.
