Pauline Esther “Polly” Campbell went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, the 10th of May, 2013, after living with chronic lung disease and esophageal cancer surgery, and their life-changing effects. She was born on the 17th of August 1930 to Troy and Esther Campbell. In addition to her parents, her older brother Dick, who died as a child leaving a permanent hole in her heart, also preceded her in death.
Polly loved acting all of her life. During the early 1950s, she was a member of the Alley Resident Company in Houston under the founder and director, Nina Vance. The 50s and early 60s saw her in New York/New England acting with greats like Uta Hagen and Jeanette Clift. She loved eating and cooking, but dining out with friends was the highlight of social gatherings. She loved Bible study with Community Bible Study and her beloved First Presbyterian Church. She loved music, especially great classic choral music. Her treasured FPC Chancel Choir was her “musical family” which she adored to worship with each Sunday when she could attend. Thank you goes to the chancel choir of FPC for “lifting her to heaven….better still bringing heaven down to her”. She loved her church worship and that was the hardest thing for her to give up on Sunday mornings. She enjoyed “sitting beside friends, believers, and those seeking a way to God”. She also loved Dr. Shanda Blackmon’s monthly support group for esophageal cancer patients. Some became good friends and she looked forward to seeing and being with them each month. “Love you guys.”
Many thanks go to Dr. Eugene Alford, Dr. Shanda Blackmon, Dr. Karla Kurrelmeyer, Dr. Alejandro Preti and Dr. Peter Schwarz. Hospice Compassus and the wonderful nurses were excellent in her care.
A memorial service is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 17th of May, in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street in Houston, where Dr. Bill Heston, Executive Pastor, and Jeanette Clift-George, are to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to a reception in the Library.
Her ashes will be spread along the Guadalupe River at Mo Ranch where she spent her happiest hours on earth. “No flowers necessary – I’m gone. Instead go visit a home bound person and see what you might do to make his or her life easier.”
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to First Presbyterian Chancel Choir, 5300 Main St., Houston, TX, 77004; and also to Mo Ranch, 2229 FM 1340, Hunt, TX, 78024.
