Retired Engineer and United States Veteran, Raúl S. Lugo Jr., passed away peacefully in a Houston Hospital at the age of 82 surrounded by his loving family on May 8, 2024. He was born in Laredo, Texas on April 14, 1942.
His battle with serious medical issues in recent years demonstrated his tremendous courage of facing life challenges with a smile; staying strong til the very end.
Raul had a distinguished career marked by dedication and excellence earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering with honors (Cum Laude) from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. He completed more than 30 years with the USAF San Antonio Air Logistics Center, KAFB, Texas as Chief of the Engineering and Tech Data Management Branch; earning countless accolades and achievements throughout his career. From there, he went on to work sixteen years for Trendsetter Engineering Inc. in Houston, Texas; a premier provider of specialized subsea solutions founded by his brother Mario Lugo P.E.
After proudly serving and honoring his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era, Raul met the love of his life, Beatrice (Bitsy) Garza, in 1965; And were soon married on April 30th, 1966. It was love at first sight, and they were blessed with 58 years of marriage. They celebrated their final anniversary together in the hospital before his passing. He was a proud, devoted and loving father of his two beautiful daughters, Lynda Lugo and Leslie Lugo.
Even though a failing heart took him from this world, his loving heart left a beacon of light for all who knew him. He had a passion for learning and an amazing memory. He would entertain family and friends with his many childhood stories. His hobby was Genealogy. Through many years of investigative research, he accumulated a vast catalog of ancestral family genealogy tracing the families back for generations and could remember dates and detailed information about all family history.
Music was an integral part of his life. In his younger years, he became interested in playing guitar. It became his passion. He was an accomplished, self taught lead guitarist whose musical abilities flourished through vigorous hours of study. He accompanied his daughter Leslie in many early performances and studio recordings and would always play the guitar in family gatherings.
Raul was predeceased by his parents Raul S. & Olivia G. Lugo and his sister Laura.
His legacy will be carried on by his loving wife Beatrice (Bitsy) Lugo, his daughters Lynda and Leslie Lugo, his brother Mario (Alma) Lugo and his devoted sister Elma (Lugo) Ortiz. His nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends and family will also feel his absence.
