

Richard was born on November 10, 1927, to Robert S. Hawkins and Sallie McGuirt Hawkins in Shreveport, Louisiana. He graduated from Byrd High School and then served in the Army. Upon discharge, he attended Centenary College and then went to work as a comptroller for Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation. He married his sweetheart, Kathryn Pryor, on February 16, 1950. He was promoted to Administrative Assistant of Gas Marketing and Rates Division and was transferred to Houston, Texas in 1969. He was responsible for negotiation of gas sales contracts and relations with gas customer companies. Upon his retirement he was Vice President of Rates and Regulation Affairs.
Richard was devoted to his church, family and friends. His highly regarded character and integrity exemplified Christian values. He served his church in Shreveport, First Presbyterian, as a choir member, a deacon, and an Elder. He served his church in Houston, Westbury Baptist, as a choir member, a deacon, church treasurer and recorder of Sunday School records; a comptroller to the end.
Richard is survived by his wife of 69 years, Kathryn of Houston; son Hunter Hawkins and wife Genie of Houston; grandchildren Stephanie Collins and husband Dwight of Houston; Joshua Miler and wife Katie of Houston; Katy Dowty and husband Tim of Edmond, Oklahoma; Matt Hawkins of Austin, Texas; and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Hawkins and his daughter Karen Miler.
There will be a private family burial and a Celebration of Life service at Westbury Baptist Church in Houston. In lieu of flowers donations should be made to Westbury Baptist Church in Houston.
