He was born on the 6th of July 1926 in Edna, Texas, to Rudolph and Mary Nagel. At age 17, Richard joined the U.S. Navy during WWII and went to Texas A&M on the GI Bill, always remaining a loyal Aggie. The Navy asked for him back during the Korean conflict, and he remained in the Navy a total of 24 years, rising from the rank of Seaman to becoming an officer and retiring as a Lieutenant.
In 1951, Richard married Martha "Pat" Daniell, who stayed by his side for these last 59 years and raised their five children. After the Navy sent them all over the country, he retired back to Texas into the new field of computer programming as a systems analyst, retiring from Houston Light & Power in 1992.
Richard was an active member of Westbury Baptist Church, becoming a deacon emeritus after years of service. In the last few years, he also attended chapel at Clarewood House, the retirement community where he and Pat resided. He was an active member of the Masons, JW Chandler Daylight Lodge #1452, AF & AM, Shriners and was active with the Knights Templar Eye Bank.
Richard had a quick mind and a sometimes biting wit, but always with a twinkle in his baby blue eyes. He loved to tell a good story, sometimes so often the family memorized it! He loved his weekly bridge games with his friends at Clarewood.
He is survived by his loving wife, Pat; his sons, Dan Nagel and his wife Susie, and Wayne Nagel; his daughters Lauren Nagel, Kristen Hallman and her husband Mark, and Allison Nagel and her husband Mark Penniman. He is also survived by grandsons, Christopher Nagel and his wife Shelley, their daughter Virginia (he was her "Great Papa"); granddaughters Aurora Porter, Sophie Penniman; and grandson, Taylor Hallman; and his siblings Bill Nagel and his wife Betty, Marilyn Clepper and her husband Jimmy, and Eunice Ann Friederichs and her husband Dalton. He was preceded in death by grandson Zachary Glover.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the care provided by the good people at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and the staff of Clarewood House.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from three o'clock in the afternoon until six o'clock in the evening on Sunday, the 27th of March, in the Drawing Room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 28th of March, at Westbury Baptist Church, 10425 Hillcroft Street in Houston, where Dr. Jeff Berger is to officiate.
