Robert Monroe Lowe Sr. (Bob) was born on December 30, 1923 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He graduated in 1941 from Ft. Worth Polytechnic High School, where he was a medalist during his senior year on the undefeated golf team. He enrolled that fall at Texas Christian University (TCU) on the first golf scholarship ever awarded by the university. Bob loved golf, had multiple holes-in-one, and played on courses all over the world until he was almost eighty years old.
In August of 1943, Bob entered the Navy Pilot Training Program, and was commissioned an Ensign at Pensacola in May, 1945. He trained on the PBY Catalina aircraft, and was about to be sent into combat when the war ended and he was discharged in December of 1945.
Bob enrolled in the Petroleum Engineering program at the University of Oklahoma in 1946, where he pledged Phi Kappa Sigma. While at OU, he met the love of his life, Shirley Margaret Barbour, to whom he was married for over 60 years, until her death in 2008.
After graduating, Bob joined the Sohio Petroleum Co.(later acquired by B.P.), where he spent his entire career, working in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Utah, Montana and Texas. After a long and distinguished career, he moved to the B.P. Houston office as Manager of Production, retiring in November, 1985.
Sharing Christ with the world was Bob’s most cherished legacy. He was a long-time member of the Memorial Church of Christ, where he initiated their World Bible School program, and managed it well into his 90’s. He and Shirley loved the work of the Impact Church of Christ, volunteering their time and supporting this inner-city work to provide spiritual guidance, emotional and physical support, and educational enrichment to the homeless, the addicted, and the underserved.
Bob Lowe passed away on November 17, 2019. He is survived by his daughter, Judy Lowe Haley, and husband Mike; his son, Robert M. Lowe Jr., and wife Kathy; grandchildren Ryan Haley, Corbin Haley, Meredith Haley Kelly, Robert J. Lowe, and Randall Lowe; by great grandchildren Quinn Kelly, Campbell Haley, Keegan Kelly, John Haley, and Cannon Kelly; and by his nephew Robert West and niece Nancy Smith.
