Robert Joe "Rob" Marett, affectionately known as “Papa Bear” to his children and their friends, and “Peepaw” to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully on Saturday, the 9th of August 2025. He was 79 years of age.
Born to Fred and Elizabeth Marett, he was raised in Houston with his older brother Fred and his twin brother Rodney. Rob’s life was marked by deep devotion—to his faith, to his family, and to the people lucky enough to know him.
A proud Texan and University of Texas alumnus, Rob was both an accomplished engineer and a skilled attorney. He spent the early part of his career as a patent examiner and patent attorney, but soon turned his attention to his true passion, civil litigation, driven by his mission to help ordinary people secure justice and right wrongs.
Beyond his professional life, his most treasured roles were those of husband, father, and grandfather. An adventurer at heart, Rob found joy in being outdoors and on the water. As an avid rafter and boatsman, he once guided a group of canoers that included Sue, the woman he would love, marry, and spend his life with. He was a steadfast and loving partner to Sue, and a deeply devoted father to his children: Scott, Jennifer, Jamie, and Stephanie. He coached their little league and soccer teams, never missing a game, and created lifelong memories on summer road trips and annual beach vacations.
Rob had a special bond with his grandchildren and was joyfully anticipating the arrival of a new grandson. Nothing brought him more happiness than time spent with his family—swapping stories, cracking jokes, and simply being together. He had his beloved quirks—most notably, his insistence that no one should ever be without a chair. It became a signature part of who he was: always making space for others, both literally and figuratively.
His faith was an anchor in his life, and he drew strength and peace from studying his Bible. Rob had a thoughtful nature and a sharp sense of humor, and was never shy in offering his opinion and a better way of doing things. He had a gift for making people feel seen and heard, often turning casual conversations into meaningful connections and leaving others with a smile and a story to remember.
Rob is survived by his loving wife Sue; his children and their families, Scott (wife Nicole, children Jackson and Greer), Jennifer (partner Michael and son on the way), Jamie (wife Kirsti), and Stephanie (partner Adrian); his twin brother, Rodney Marett; and many other extended family members and close friends that Rob thought of as family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Elizabeth Marett; and his brother, Fred Marett.
A service to celebrate Rob’s life is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 17th of August, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent grand foyer.
Rob’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, and in every conversation where someone tells a joke, pulls up an extra chair, or simply makes time for family.
