Rowena "Rene" Johnson went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 16, 2012, just one week short of her 93rd birthday. She was born on July 23, 1919 in Franklin, Texas to Pat and Sallie Morgan. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Claude Johnson, and eight of her nine siblings: Velma, Evelyn, Ivadell, Herchel, Polly, Adrian, Fanny, and Mary Jo. She is survived by her daughter, Mollie Johnson Calley, her granddaughter, Carrie Calley Fronek, her husband, Steve Fronek, two great granddaughters, Emily and Allie Fronek, and one brother, Carlton Morgan.
Rene worked for the City of Houston Library for what she thought was going to be just three months. She retired from the library after 31 years and 3 months. After retirement, she volunteered at both her great granddaughters' school library and Houston's First Baptist Church Library.
Rene and Claude were members of the West End Church of Christ for many years. After moving in with her daughter, Mollie and her husband, Leon, she attended Houston’s First Baptist Church where she enjoyed her Bible class with many friends, some of whom she had known since she and Claude were newlyweds.
Rene was a strong believer, steady in her Christian faith, had many friends with whom she enjoyed living life, was a hard worker dedicated to whatever she set her mind to, and loved her family immensely, especially those two great granddaughters with whom she had a close relationship. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Houston’s First Baptist Church Library in Rene’s name. Houston’s First Baptist Church Library, 7401 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024.
