Ruby Wagner went to meet her Lord and Savior at the age of 88 on Monday, May 8, 2017. She was born September 26, 1928, in Round Top, TX, to David and Leona (Schroeder) Doerr. She graduated from Round Top Carmine High School in 1945, where she played volleyball and was a cheerleader. She married her high school sweetheart, Alfred Wagner, Jr., on September 4, 1949. They moved to College Station, Texas, where Al finished his college education. After graduation, they moved to Odessa where Al obtained a job in the oil industry. Ruby always gave her utmost loving support to her husband as they relocated many times—Lubbock, Monahans, Sinton, Corpus Christi and finally, Houston. After many years as a geologist in Houston, Al ventured out and built a successful oil and gas exploration company with Ruby as his loyal supporter. Times were hard, but being a frugal German couple, they managed to put money aside every month to provide for their family.
Ruby was a member of the Houston Geological Wives Association (now HPAC), where she maintained her membership for the rest of her life.
She and Al were staunch supporters of the Winedale Historical Society, Al’s family homestead, and served on the Board of Directors there for 9 years. Her passions in life were her three precious children, her home, gardening, music, dancing, world travel, the fighting Texas A & M football team and band, her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and of course, spending as much time as possible with her loving husband of 62 years.
Ruby was an amazing wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend with a heart as big as Texas filled with love for all people. Her children deemed her their “Angel on Earth,” as she was adored and admired as their precious matriarch and queen. She always dressed impeccably and was the subject of admiration by others. She is surely now dancing in heaven with the love of her life, Al, to their favorite song, “Drinking Champagne” by George Strait—they were such a sight to behold on the dance floor!
She is survived by daughter Linda Wagner Ward and husband, Cecil Ward of Phoenix, sons James G. Wagner and wife, Karen, of Spicewood and Ross E. Wagner and wife, Cassandra, of Houston; and grandchildren Michael Ward and wife, Alicia, of Austin Texas, Dr. James M. Holmes Jr. and wife Mandy, Summer Holmes Warner and husband, Andy Warner, and Blake Ward, all of Phoenix, Rubianne Wagner, Karina Wagner, and Brendan Wagner of Houston; great grandchildren Charly and Drew Warner and Jon Zachary Holmes. She was predeceased by her husband, Al, her mother and father, David and Leona Doerr, her sister, Lorean Swafford and brother, Loyd.
