

He grew up in San Antonio, TX and graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1955. He went on to graduate from Baylor University in 1959 and then from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX in 1962. Sam completed an Internship at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma Washington in 1963. He then completed his Fellowship of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota from 1965 to 1968 and served on the staff at the University of Minnesota from 1968 to 1970.
Sam served in the US Army as a Battalion Surgeon from 1963 to 1965 in Gelnhausen, West Germany. In 1970 Samuel returned to Texas, this time residing in Houston. He joined the Diagnostic Clinic where he practiced Dermatology for 20 years before establishing a private practice. Sam retired from the practice of Dermatology in 2017.
Sam had many career accomplishments, including clinical appointments in the departments of Dermatology at both Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Medical School Houston. Although never in academic practice, he continued his research activities utilizing the immunofluorescent technique to study the chronic blistering diseases of the skin and mucous membranes. Because of his research and clinical experience, he was considered an authority on the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. Sam was the author and co-author of multiple research and clinical publications as well as being co-editor of two text books on the immunodermatologic characteristics of the chronic blistering diseases of the skin and mucous membrane.
He was a member of many medical organizations including the American Dermatological Association and an honorary member of the Pacific Dermatological Association and the Polish Dermatological Society.
He was a long time member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and the Briar Club.
Sam was an avid reader with a particular interest in history, a skilled fly fisher, tennis player, sailor and swimmer with a passion for Swing and Country Western Dancing.
He was preceded in death by his wife Camille Cheesman Bean and his parents, Mr. & Mrs. James Allen Bean. He is survived by his three sons, Allen, Scott and Matthew and his four grandchildren: Meredith, Carolyn, Payton and Reed.
