I worked with Sam at the USGS in Atlanta. I was fortunate enough to get to know him a little bit when we attended a conference together. He was not my supervisor, but another colleague of ours that he did supervise was also attending the conference and giving a presentation. Sam told me that he would always attend all presentations given by his employees to show support. I was so impressed by this.

This was Daniel when he was 5 months old and cousin Samuel came to visit. June 2010.

We only knew you when you were very young, but you were always full of hope and optimism. Our last memory is of taking you home on the plane, back to the States after your stay in the UK.

We at the USGS in Norcross are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Sam. I enjoyed Sam's enthusiasm for science and his edgy silliness. For many reasons I see him as leaving the world way too soon.

Gerard Gonthier, Hydrologist, Sam was my supervisor.

Sam was a cherished friend and colleague. I will miss the energy, wisdom, and passion that he showed as we planned and executed a conference in Colorado last winter. I remember the smile on his face as he checked in with his family by phone, which led to an outpouring of pride as he shared stories of his family with me.  I am so sorry for this terrible loss, and I hope knowing Sam’s true and caring nature brings comfort.

My dearest sympathies go out to the family. 

Sam coming to SAWSC was one of the best things that has happened to our office in a long time, while he brought an abundance of knowledge and experience, he also brought kindness and laughter and personally for me his friendship. I will miss our daily chats not only about what's going on at work but more importantly about our families. He never failed to put a smile on my face, usually all it would take was that big goofy grin and laugh. I hope you are at peace and know that impact you have made on many in the short time that you were here.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Sam. He worked as part of my team in the USGS San Antonio office in 2016. Sam worked hard on computer generated hydrologic flow models for our project here. He enjoyed his work and was very helpful to me on telling me about the San Antonio area when I first moved here. He will be missed by our office team and many in the USGS. Please be assured of my prayers for Sam and all the family at this most difficult time.

Sam was my colleague and friend. His enthusiasm and drive to bring change was contagious. He was brilliant and strategic, and I will miss that grin he had when we figured out a way around a problem or rule that was preventing progress. He encouraged me and pushed me to be better and do more. Sam made the challenges of work fun, and I always looked forward to our calls.

Sam has been on my mind throughout the holiday season. I worked just around the corner from his office and would often stop by for a chat. We’d talk about all sorts of things, and I deeply valued his professional insights. Sam’s unique and straightforward perspectives always struck me as both refreshing and thought-provoking.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends in Texas, a place he was always proud to call home, and to the new community of friends he was building here. Sam will truly be missed.

First and foremost, I am deeply sorry to hear about Sam’s passing. I’ve been thinking about it all throughout the holidays.

Since I started at USGS in Norcross in July 2024, working directly across from him, Sam’s friendly presence made a big impact on me. I can still hear his distinctive footsteps approaching for a chat. He always came in with a smile and treated everyone kindly.

Sam often spoke with great pride about his son and shared his aspirations for their time together. Our last conversation was just before he left for the holidays; he expressed his excitement about spending Christmas with his family.

As a fellow service member, I deeply appreciated Sam’s dedication and the camaraderie we shared. His commitment to his family, his work, and his country was truly inspiring. I’m grateful to have known Sam and will always remember his spirit and knowledge.

I worked with Sam for several years as part of a Texas statewide flood initiative.  I knew Sam to be a passionate leader and doer.  He was very sharp, asked the right questions, and consistently tried to make things better.  He clearly cared deeply about the work we were doing and sought to contribute wherever he could.  I am shocked and saddened to hear news of his passing and wish his family and friends my deepest condolences.
