SARAH FAULKNER JACKSON, lovingly supported by family and friends at her bedside, passed peacefully from this world to the next on her spiritual journey. She lived life to the fullest until a month ago, when she suffered a series of strokes, and died on the 24th of October 2011.
A native Houstonian, Sarah was born on the 3rd of August 1931, the daughter of Sarah Drumm Faulkner and Andrew Davis Faulkner. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, baby Sarah. She is survived by her beloved husband of fifty-nine years, Jim Jackson, her daughter Elizabeth Jackson Royce and son-in-law Ben Royce, her son Davis Jackson and daughter-in-law Sheila Jackson, her sister Betty Faulkner Davis, her mother-in-law Emily Jackson, her grandchildren James Royce, Robert Royce, Ian Jackson and Madeleine Jackson Dunn and husband David, her sister-in-law Amanda Jackson Hochenedel and husband Jeff, and her extended family including nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sarah graduated from The Kinkaid School and from Rice University with the distinction of Summa Cum Laude. She was a life-long member of The Church of St. John the Divine where her parents were founding members. Always active in her community, Sarah belonged to a variety of civic organizations and support groups throughout her life, most notably The Junior League of Houston where she was president 1964-65, The Garden Club of Houston and the vestry of St. John the Divine.
She was happiest when doing for others with “faith, family, friends” as her guiding principle. Her life truly exemplified “Let your light so shine before men that they will see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) Her light shone brightly and we will deeply miss her warmth, beauty, graciousness, inquisitive mind, fun sense of humor, generous hospitality, exceptional executive ability, modesty, wisdom, courage, faith and above all, her unfailing devotion.
Her family especially wishes to thank Houston Hospice, Sarah’s dedicated caregivers at The Methodist Hospital and Sarah’s doctors: Gregory Graham, Suzanne Lasek-Nesselquist, John Volpi, Clare Gentry and Teresa Kaldis.
A memorial service, in celebration of Sarah's life, is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 29th of October, in the Sanctuary of The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. Dr. Laurens A. Hall, Rector, and the Rev. Dr. Douglas W. Richnow, Senior Associate Rector, are to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Sumners Hall.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private inurnment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in Sarah's memory may be directed to a charity of one's choice.
