Sharone D. Stewart was born September 21, 1951, to Marjorie M. Cockrell and John R. Stewart, Sr. His family and friends will always feel the awesome blessing of Sharone’s life during his birthday month as Sharone’s favorite song, “September” by Earth, Wind, & Fire, plays in our hearts.
Sharone graduated with honors from Jack Yates Senior High School in 1969. He participated in band and played on the baseball team—both of which became lifelong passions.
After high school, he furthered his education at Texas Southern University, majoring in business administration. At TSU, he was a proud member of the Ocean of Soul Marching Band, jazz ensemble, musician’s union, and Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity. His musical talents were so superb that he was given the nickname “Superman” by his peers.
In 1971, he pledged the Delta Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was a leader in his fraternity, twice functioning as Dean of Pledges.
The most important moment in Sharone’s time at TSU was when he met the love of his life, Yvonne Stewart. Yvonne and Sharone remained together for over 50 years, barely leaving each other’s side.
In the spring of 1975, he was hired at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (AT&T). As a loyal, hardworking employee, he was promoted to manager in 1980—a position he held until his retirement in 2013.
Sharone joined Union Bethel AME Church in 1996. He was a highly active and dedicated member of his church family. He served as president of the Male Chorus, Inspirational Choir, and Lay Organization. He participated on the Trustee and Steward Board, Finance Committee, and was a Kingsman under the WMS banner.
In his leisure time, he played softball with the Chargers as an outfielder, wearing number 9. He loved the game of golf, even managing a hole-in-one. He was an outstanding chess player and bowler. He loved a good card game or dominoes, and he spun records as a DJ on the side. He enjoyed traveling, especially with the Five Married Couples.
Sharone made his final transition on Friday, March 27, 2026.
His parents and daughter, Shayla Renee Stewart, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Stewart; daughter, Sonya Stewart Simpson, and her husband, Garrett; granddaughters, Sophia Yvonne Simpson and Gabriella Renee Simpson; brother, John R. Stewart, Jr., and his wife, Dorothy; sisters-in-law, Wanda Sharp, Marie Nwaorie, and Debbie Adams; brothers-in-law, Eric Saxton, Sr., Don Kuykendall and his wife, Elaine, and Vernon Kuykendall and his wife, Julie; godsister, Sharonda Hawkins; sister, Michele Thornton; godson, Ronald Thornton II; and goddaughter, Monique Thornton; the Cockrell family, the Stewart family, the Kuykendall family, the Booker family, the Simpson family; and a host of cousins, church family, friends, and neighbors.
