Our precious Simon David Reistroffer was a gift from God born May 19, 2000 into a family that cherished his every breath and on June 8, 2010 our sweet Simon was granted his angel wings at the end of a 5-year struggle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Simon had Down Syndrome and although his challenges were many his spirit was strong. After his leukemia diagnosis at the young age of 5 his challenges grew but his spirit shined brighter than ever.
For most, a lifetime is measured in accomplishments and possessions. Simon’s life was measured in smiles and the gifts of love and understanding that only special-needs children are able to give. His rich life was filled with happy times especially if water was nearby. Whether it was squirting the hose and watching it splash on the driveway, letting the rain pour over his body, swimming, riding the surf in the ocean or watching the windshield wipers move the rain, water gave him a peace that made him happy. Music also filled his spirit. He enjoyed everything from The Who, Cheryl Crow, Robert Earl Keen to the Shrek soundtracks and would spend hours listening, singing or dancing to all music.
Probably he was happiest when he was listening to a story from his dad….at night before bed, just to entertain during the day or to be distracted from the pain of cancer, he would be calmed by his daddy's voice and creative storytelling, weaving together the events of the day into a fascinating plot.
He adored spending time with his brother Jake and sister Ava playing cards, hide and seek or jumping on the trampoline. His extended family and friends delighted in his stacking the blocks and bottles and skillfully “missing” with his beloved stuffed Mike Wazowski doll. These wonderful memories will be held in our hearts forever.
School was a beautiful sanctuary for Simon and he was most proud of his newfound ability to read, learning new words every week. Although it is sad that Simon’s illness defined him in many ways, he was still just a boy wanting new adventures every day.
His angelic ability to persevere through many mental, physical and medical obstacles, waking up every morning with a smile on his face and a determination in his step, motivated all who knew him. He fought his battles with the innocence of a child and the strength of a lion and always with a gentle spirit.
Though his road was difficult it was paved with love and care from so many people who helped him along the way. Countless teachers, therapists, friends, family, nurses and doctors touched his life and in return he touched theirs. We want to thank all of those who helped our precious Simon on this road. Now he is free of all his earthly challenges and his mom knows he is playing hide and seek with the angels.
Simon is survived by his parents Will and Marci Reistroffer; brother Jake; sister Ava; maternal grandparents Dave and Carol Waymire, paternal grandmother Margaret Reistroffer, maternal Great Grandmother Bertha Waymire and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and close friend Donna Avolio.
The family would like to thank Texas Children's Cancer Center countless doctors and nurses, Jalane Theis, Dr. ZoAnn Dreyer, Dr. Judith Margolin
