After high school, Steve decided to honor his country by serving two years in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1971. He spoke very fondly of these years that taught him self-discipline, responsibility and respect. He returned to his parents' home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he attended Louisiana State University for two years. He then moved to the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans and discovered a new-found love for the hospitality industry. He continued his career at the University of Houston Hilton College, serving as the first night auditor employed for the newly-opened hotel, graduating in the summer of 1976. He met the love of his life, Loreley, while working as General Manager of the Howard Johnson hotel in Houston. Steve used his Southern gentleman charm to “woo” her, eventually marrying her in September 1981. Steve and Loreley both shared a love for travel, experiencing cruises to the Caribbean, exploring the islands of Hawaii and visiting eight countries in Europe before welcoming beautiful twin boys into the world in July 1990. Steve dedicated over 20 years of his life to marketing education before retiring in 2003. He is preceded in passing by his father, Herman. He is survived by his beloved wife, Loreley; his mother, Gladys; his son Christopher and daughter-in-law, Tess; his son Jonathan; his brother Dan and sister-in-law Carol; brother Mike and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve wore many hats throughout his life. He was a loving and dedicated son, brother, sailor, husband, friend, father and teacher. Steve was actively involved in all aspects of his sons’ life growing up, serving as coach of their basketball and soccer teams. He was the epitome of a father figure to all of his sons’ friends. He loved being outside and found peace in the outdoors, whether he was golfing, doing yard work, or, as known by his sons' friends, being the grill master “Papa-Rup”, famously known for his signature barbeque chicken, ribs and Cajun specialties. Steve always looked forward to Saturday nights to watch LSU football with his kids, while filling the house with the smell of his unique black popcorn. Yet, nothing made Steve happier than his family. He instilled in them the importance of honesty, kindness, service to others, respect and education. At family gatherings, Steve will always be remembered for making people laugh, and making them feel at home. Full of charisma and personality, he was truly one of a kind.
The Ruppert Family would like to thank everyone in attendance for honoring his wonderful life.
