Sue was born in Commerce, Texas on April 9, 1929 to Sam Hughston and Edna Edwards Mauldin. At the age of 17, she met Dan H. Farr, just returned from combat as a Marine fighter pilot, on October 31, 1946 while they were students at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and they married the following summer on June 30, 1947. Dan completed his law degree at SMU in 1950, and she accompanied him to Europe where he served during the Korean War as a captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps, primarily in Trieste, Italy where their first daughter, Robin, was born. They returned to the United States in 1956, living first in Louisiana where their second daughter, Jamie, was born, then moving to Midland, Texas, where Dan joined the legal department of Shell Oil Company. In 1966 they made Houston their permanent home.
Sue was devoted to her family. She was gregarious, spirited, and enjoyed hosting the parties that were a regular occurrence among her and Dan’s friends and co-workers. She was a visual artist from an early age, working in both oil paints and watercolors. She loved beauty, and she brought that sensitivity and artistic temperament to her home and family life. She delighted in gardens—azaleas, lilies, amaryllis in particular—and the small creatures who made their homes there—many varieties of birds, especially hummingbirds, as well as the geckos so common in Houston.
She is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Dan Farr. She is survived by her daughters Jamie Skinner, Robin Davidson and husband Tony; her grandchildren Joshua Davidson and partner Jamie Lynn Wise, Chelsea Lindquist and husband Philip, Katherine Stalcup and husband Mark, Stewart Skinner, Virginia Skinner; her great grandson Brody Lindquist; her sister Sydney Bivona and brother Sam Mauldin.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway (I-10), on Tuesday, March 21, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. A memorial service will begin at 1:00 pm Wednesday, March 22, at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Sue loved flowers, and those are welcomed. Or, for those wishing to do so, memorial donations may be made in Sue’s name to the charity of your choice.
