Thomas Houston Lowers, Jr., age 91, passed away from natural causes on January 2, 2018 in Sugar Land, Texas. Thomas was born on August 4, 1926 in South Charleston, West Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Houston Lowers, Sr. and Eley Alice Hayes Lowers.
Prior to his entry into service, Thomas married Dora Katherine Rhodes. He joined the Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific on board an aircraft carrier in the engine room. After the war he returned to West Virginia where attended college in the evening to obtain a mechanical engineering degree. Thomas and Dora had three children, Thomas Dewie Lowers, Larry R. Lowers and Cheryl Delite Lowers Ashley. He was a dedicated father who loved his family very much.
Thomas worked for Union Carbide in both engineering and construction for 45 years. His work took him to West Virginia, Puerto Rico and Texas, where he designed components and supervised the building of chemical plant units. He was proud of a project that involved the designing of two large waste abatement tanks that were constructed in the United States and floated to Ponce, Puerto Rico, where he supervised their installation. He was also especially proud of his job as the construction manager in the design and construction of a Silicones II Project that was built to special specifications using exotic metals and equipment in South Charleston, West Virginia.
In addition to his love for his family, Thomas also enjoyed travelling in his RV with his wife, friends and grandchildren. Their trips took them to several western states, as well as to the eastern and southern coastal states. Woodworking and hunting were also enjoyable pastimes.
Thomas was preceded in death by Dora, his wife of 65 years, his oldest son, Thomas Dewie, his daughter Cheryl Lowers Ashley, and his sisters, Mabel Cobbs and Lucille Walden.
He is survived by his son Larry & his wife Patty, sister, Juanita Vincell of Middleburg, Florida, grandchildren, Tom Lowers & Molly of Katy, Erick Lowers & Stacy of Houston, Jennifer Ashley Baron & Josh of Katy, and Jamie Ashley Eaton of Austin.
