Born in San Juan, Batangas, Philippines, on December 8, 1939, Mario was the beloved son of Delia Triviño and Vicente Castillo, Sr., and grew up alongside his cherished siblings: Ophelia, Violetta, Macrina, Caloy, and Antonio.
From a young age, Mario was known for his bright spirit and deep love of learning, which led him to attend Ateneo and the University of the Philippines Medical School, where he earned his medical degree. A proud and accomplished anesthesiologist, he dedicated his life’s work to the care and well-being of others. His leadership and service were recognized through his role as Past President of TAPP.
On July 24, 1971, Mario married the love of his life, Sonia Martinez. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and resilience — a life that took them from the Philippines to Michigan and ultimately to Texas. They raised three wonderful children: Clarissa, Guillermo, and Pia.
Mario’s passions went far beyond the operating room. He loved tennis, bowling, and basketball, and brought a playful sense of humor wherever he went — whether snapping funny photos of family and friends or delivering unforgettable commentary during movie nights. His joyful spirit, kindness, and quick wit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted wife Sonia, his children Clarissa, Guillermo, and Alanna, son-in-law, Robert Ramsey; sisters Ofelia Magboo, Violetta Castillo, and Macrina Quema; nieces Leah Magboo-Francisco, Ana Magboo-Ortanez, Monica Castillo-Fulgentes, nephews Ramon Magboo, Gerry Magboo, Quito Quema, Francisco Quema, Joaquín Quema, Antonio Castillo, Jr., Vicente Castillo, Joaquin Castillo; grand nieces and grand nephews who will continue to celebrate his remarkable life. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Delia and Vicente, his sister Juana, and brothers Guillermo, Caloy, and Antonio.
Services to honor Mario’s life will be held in Houston, Texas. A viewing service will take place on Wednesday, May 7th, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079, with a reception to follow.
The Castillo family wishes to express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, and memories shared by family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Your kindness brings comfort during this time.
Mario’s favorite book in the Bible was Psalms, a reflection of his faith and strength. We share Psalm 23:6 in his honor:
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Dr. Vicente “Mario” Castillo, Jr. will forever be remembered as a devoted son, husband, father, and doctor. He lived his life with integrity, humor, and compassion — always leaving those around him with a smile, a story, or his signature phrase:
“What a guy!” Indeed, he was an amazing guy, and his spirit will live on in all who loved him.
