Whenever your cheeks start to hurt from laughing so much, you know it will remind you of Joe. He loved life so very much and ensured everyone he encountered, left his presence smiling. He was the storyteller of the family, and would always laugh when sharing a memory with anyone. An avid Dallas Cowboy fan, he had no hesitation with hating on the Texans, or playfully calling people out as a “Losers!” Also, he was famous for ribbing people who lost to him in a game of dominos, but always in his own loving way.
His fondness of comedy movies (He owned ALL of the Tyler Perry Madea movies) and TV shows; his favorite show being "Psych", reflected in his personality of being entertaining and sharp. If you needed to know anything celebrity gossip related, look no further than Joe. He was more than willing to catch you up on the latest. Joe really loved watching scary movies with his siblings. As children, his sister Ungeanetta, decided to scare him by re-enacting a scene from Friday the 13th, which they happened to have just viewed together. She waited until he went to the restroom to hide under his bed. When he laid down to sleep, she grabbed his head from underneath the bed which resulted in Joe screaming to the top of his lungs as he thought it was the character Jason, from the movie. He loved to relay the story every chance he got and vowed to get Ungeanetta back.
Wherever he went, Joe was always happy, loud and the life of the party; his life goal was bringing people together. He took pride in his BBQ and would always say that his was the best. Once he was outside grilling when a storm erupted. He held on for dear life to an umbrella while covering himself and the grill- the umbrella kept breaking open. The kids were cracking up seeing how determined he was to get that umbrella to cooperate.
Barbara, Joe’s mother filled the house with great music, like Al Green and Marvin Gaye, but Joe also stuck to anything from the 80’s and 90’s; Prince, Michael Jackson, and Boyz II Men. His family knew him best, and NaNa, daddy’s girl, liked pointing out his guilty pleasures, like the TV show Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta. He would deny it, but they would laugh about it, because his kids and family were his life.
Joe would do anything to protect his family, and would offer great advice, like “GET LOW! If you hear someone breaking in” or say he would call his dad Walter to come over. He was the feisty one in the family, so growing up if you would hear someone yelling “Mama", it was only Joe messing with his siblings, and he would make you think he was tattling!! Ungeanetta was usually the only one who would step up to him. As Joe got older, if you ever saw someone wanting to fight him “Help the Bear!” is what he would say, him being the Bear, knowing full well that he was full of grit and ready to go. Joe would always have his own spin on saying things, one time when one of the kids wanted to go eat someplace where the wings were too expensive, he said “Those prices are higher than a giraffe’s neck!”, while someone else would just simply say “it’s too much”.
Joe’s children and family were his life and he loved them with all his heart. Remembrance in the way he lived will be eminent by how loving he was, and by how making others happy made him happy as well.
Joe is proceeded in death by his dad Walter Alexander Patterson Jr., and father Wildred Lee Jr.
He is leaves to cherish his memories his adoring mother Barbara Patterson; children Nikko Taylor, Joseph Lee, Nasya Lee, Elijah Lee, and two grandkids; siblings, Walter Patterson III, Kiron Patterson (Lori Patterson), Ungeanetta Lee-Richards, Walkesha Washington (Forris Washington), Precious Nunez (Jose Nunez); and several other relatives and friends.
