Esperanza Ledon Barragan, a woman of deep faith, great warmth, and an undeniable love for music and family, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026 at Cogir Memory Care of Turlock. She was 90 years old.
She was born on October 2, 1935 in Acaponeta, Nayarit, Mexico and came to the United States as a teenager when her family settled in Brawley, California. There, she met the love of her life, Robert F. Barragan. They married on July 4, 1954 and five years later put down roots in Turlock, California, where she would spend the rest of her life.
For 32 years, Esperanza worked at Patterson Frozen Foods, beginning on September 8, 1966 and retiring with the kind of loyalty that defined everything she did. She brought that same commitment to her faith, her community, and her family.
A devout Catholic, she was a longtime member of the YLI of Sacred Heart, where she participated in bible study and prayer group alongside her church family. She was also a proud member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 5059.
Those who knew Esperanza knew she had music in her bones. Big band, crooners, boleros, mariachi, rock and roll - she loved it all, and she danced to every note. She opened her home freely, hosting gatherings that people looked forward to. She traveled when she could, with Princess Cruises earning a special place in her heart. Quiet evenings at home were spent with her telenovelas, classic films, and variety shows full of singing and dancing.
She is survived by her children: Luisa, Esperanza, Elizabeth, and Lionel (daughter-in-law Denise); her sisters Julieta, Gloria, and Nelly (brother-in-law Rafael); eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and dear comadres who were family in every sense of the word.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Barragan Sr.; her son, Robert Barragan Jr.; her grandmother, Mama Manuela; her mother, Felicitas; and her sister, Delia.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM on Wednesday, April 22 at Lakewood Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Hughson, California. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Sacred Heart Church or VFW Turlock in her honor.
