

Melvin Andy Sumter of Waterford, California passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 11, 2024. Melvin was 72 years old. Melvin was preceded in death by his father Clyde Sumter, mother Lois Sumter, his daughter Stephanie Sumter, his younger brother Clyde Wade Sumter, and his first wife and mother of his children Margie Ann Woodard.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 40 years Teresa Sumter, his daughter Christina Griffith of Valley Springs, his daughter Tiffney Looney of Waterford, and his son Melvin Sumter Jr. of Waterford, as well as his stepson Shawn Sisney of Waterford, stepdaughter Trena Scroggins, and stepson Quenton Keith Sisney of Waterford. He leaves behind Emily Craig of Mariposa, Cheryl Hall of Waterford, his sister Alta Rocha of Modesto, his brother Doug Sumter of Denair, brother Danny Sumter of Newman, and brothers Walter and Johnny Sumter of Kansas.
Melvin had 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandkids, and many nieces and nephews.
Melvin owned and operated his own drywall business for over 40 years. He graduated from Modesto High School and attended his high school reunions up until the last year before his death. He loved hunting, NASCAR, football, and shooting Pool. He was a member of the Clamper Chapters 49 and 58.
Mel was a kind man, who loved his family and friends dearly. He worked hard to provide for all his kids and family to give them a life he could be proud of. He was a great man, a great friend, and a great husband and father. He will be missed by all, especially by those who knew and loved him dearly. We will all miss the phone calls.
