Shannon Michele Cantrell of Modesto, California, was diagnosed with advanced uterine sarcoma and metastatic bone disease on January 23, 2026. When faced with the inevitable outcome before her, Shannon bravely chose to spend her remaining time with dignity, comfort and the people she loved most, opting for hospice care over treatment. After living the majority of her adult years with chronic pain due to fibromyalgia and myofacial pain syndrome (MPS), she was grateful to be leaving her earthly body. Reflecting the tenacious spirit she was known for, once her prognosis was confirmed, she could often be heard saying, "Let's get this show on the road.". This decision, made without hesitation, demonstrated significant mental fortitude, stoicism, resilience and inner strength. And the profound courage and conviction she held at her core until her final breath was had. Shannon died at home on February 8, 2026, at the age of 48, surrounded by her parents and siblings, knowing she was truly loved and would forever live on in their shared memories of her.
Shannon possessed a brilliant mind, disarming wit, and a caring heart full of both justice and compassion. She loved learning and teaching. She spent almost 15 years as an elementary school teacher's aide before her disability made it impossible for her to work. She loved children and her greatest reward was watching them learn and knowing her contributions were instrumental to their education. Shannon enjoyed reading, writing, word search puzzles and mindfulness workbooks. She was an artistic and creative spirit with such talent she taught herself to sew, embroider, crochet, make jewelry and would often do so for her family and friends. She kept herself current on world affairs and the politics of our nation and never hesitated to share her opinion on either should she be asked. She was both fearful and hopeful for the future of our country. She had the heart of an activist and the soul of a poet. She was a classic beauty with a fiery spirit who dared to be herself in a world that wanted to change her. Shannon was a real one. She was genuine, loyal, truly authentic and she didn't know how to be anything else.
Shannon is survived by her mother, Janice Emma Cantrell, her father, Jimmie Lloyd Cantrell, aunts Elaine Amstutz and Pamela Apalategui, her brother Jeremy J. Cantrell, sisters Anjanette D. Cantrell Briton and Kellie E. Marin, and several nieces and nephews whom she adored as well as a support companion animal, Kalliope who will continue to provide the family with all the love and joy she shared with Shannon.
A gathering to honor and celebrate Shannon will be announced in the near future, targeting late spring, early summer depending on venue availability. We invite family and friends to join us in remembering and celebrating her by posting on this memorial website. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Community Hospice of Stanislaus County at hospiceheart.org and American Cancer Society at cancer.org.
