George Ernest Backer

George leaves behind his loving wife and best friend, soul mate Sharon Bow. Beloved brother of John Backer(Linda) and predeceased by sister Katherine Backer(Yves Perras deceased).

Brother-in-law to Kevin Bow, Stephen Bow, Norman Bow(deceased).

Favorite Uncle Buck to Steven Backer and Chris(Megan) Backer. Nicholas Boisvenu, Cynthia and David Wannamaker(Hannah), Corey Bow, Megan Bow. Great Uncle to Lexi and Brooklyn Backer.

George was born in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec on January 15, 1957 to parents, the late George Ernest Backer and the late Therese Lambert.

George loved cars and his passion was to work on them. He loved going to the NHRA drag races with his buds Mike Lacelle, Robin McGuire and his brother John. Sanair, Maple Grove, Pomona and the Gatornationals were just some of the tracks he visited, collecting caps,memorabilia,cool t-shirts and swag along the way. Racing from a young age at Luskville Dragway with his brother John were some of George's happiest memories. Driving home from the track, smelling of burnt rubber,oil and gas meant you had a great day.

Road trips,going to local car shows with his 79' Camaro or his 1980 Grand Prix, building model cars in his man cave,listening to tunes loudly, spending time with Sharon, family and friends at the trailer at Glenalee Campground in White Lake, Ontario brought much happiness to George later in life.

George was a mechanic for 18 years at Kavanaugh's Esso on Beechwood before joining the team at OC Transpo as a Bus Mechanic in 2003. George retired from the City of Ottawa in 2021.

The family would like to express it's deep gratitude to the Hull Hospital staff, emergency dept. and 6th Floor Dr.'s, nurses Lionel, Catherine and Ediras who cared for George. Special thank you to Dr. Maya Doumit and his family care Physician Dr. Genevieve Ducharme-Trites.

In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite charity or pay it forward by being kind to others, help out someone in need. George is doing burn outs in the sky with many a racer and race fan who passed before him.
