My beloved family, friends, and honored guests. This morning I have the privilege of standing before you and share the life of Hujat Bekele Endalew. To my sister and I he was our beloved brother,
to mom and dad, he was beloved son, to our aunts and uncles, he was a beloved nephew,
to his nieces and nephews, he was a beloved uncle, and to his friends, he was the one that they could always count on.
I wish I had all day and night to share with you the amazing life journey that my brother had embarked on. Unfortunately, there are not enough words and time to do it justice. With that in mind let me give you a glimpse of my amazing brothers life.
Hujat life’s journey started on November 6, 1981 in Asmara. When he was 5 he moved to Addis Ababa.
While in Addis he attended school in Indian community school. Soon after that Hujat moved to Houston Texas with his family. He attended grade school and went on to graduate from high school in Alief Clodine region schools. After completion of high school he attended the University of Houston to study philosophy. Soon after Hujat entered the work force with different companies mostly focused in sales.
While what I shared with you is a brief synopsis of my brother’s life it does not truly capture the essence of who he is.
Here are some of the few things I recall when I think of my brother. His humor, He loved making people laugh, and most of all he enjoyed laughing himself. So often he would break into laughter in the middle of a sentence, his mirth unable to be contained. He like to observe, and often noticed details others had overlooked. He had an infectious smile that lit up the room.
His attentiveness and willingness to listen, When he talked to you, he made you feel like the most important person in the world. He always gave you his full attention and would give your opinions due regard even if he disagreed with them. He had no problem being unconventional and did not cave into popular opinion. He could easily play devil’s advocate just to challenge your viewpoint and had inexhaustible energy for conversation and verbal gymnastics.
His calm and collected approach to life, When unexpected things would happen…lets say a flat tire, a traffic jam… you name it… it never seemed to bother him. He took life’s’ challenges in stride and did not become overtaken by things that were outside his control. While he was Mr calm in many things you will see his passions flare up when addressing matters of injustice or hypocrisies. He craved honesty and directness in all his relationships.
My family….I can go on and on and on. Whereas he had led a full life, I am beyond devastated that he left us way too soon.
Hujat is preceded by his sister Nahid, and survived by his mother Nighisti Adgoiy and father Bekele Endalew, Sister Lily and her husband Abyie. his nieces Hannah and Leah.
