

John Richard Lyke, born on June 19, 1940, in Bath, New York, peacefully departed on September 13, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and inspiration at the age of 83.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Ellie, his cherished daughter, Mary, beloved brother, Stan (Joyce), and his son-in-law Levon, the husband of his late daughter Susan. He was also the proud and doting grandfather of Colby, Tyler, Mallory, Chloe, Nick, CJ (Tony), Kacee (Mario), and the great-grandfather of Kennedy, Noah, Tyler Jr., Drasen, Bexley, and Emma. Additionally, he will be deeply missed by his special caregivers, Alesha and Jason.
John Richard Lyke was preceded in death by his beloved son, Callen, and daughter, Susan. Their memory will forever reside in his heart, a testament to the enduring love of family.
More than a retired teacher, John was a dedicated educator who left an indelible mark on countless students. He devoted his career to shaping young minds and nurturing the next generation with knowledge and kindness. A true aficionado of country music, with Johnny Cash as his favorite, he shared this passion with friends and family. Additionally, he held a deep affection for cars, especially his 57 Chevy, relishing discussions and tinkering with them with unwavering enthusiasm.
John was not only a loving family member and cherished friend but also a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. His dedication to his country led him to serve with honor and distinction in Germany, where he demonstrated unwavering commitment to his duty. John’s military service was a testament to his patriotism and courage, and it was a significant chapter in his life that he held close to his heart.
Grounded in his Christian faith, John was a devout Christian who lived guided by his spiritual beliefs. His faith provided a strong moral compass, and he extended kindness and compassion to all. His religious convictions were evident in the love and support he offered his family and community.
In addition to his many accomplishments and passions, John’s loving wife, Ellie, was the heart and soul of his life. Their love story spanned over six decades, a testament to the enduring power of love and partnership. Ellie’s unwavering support and the warmth of their shared love created a home where laughter flourished, and friends felt welcomed.
Above all, John was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His daughter Mary held a special place in his heart, and their bond was unbreakable. She truly was the apple of his eye, his Button, and their relationship served as a beautiful example of the love and closeness that family can bring.
John Richard Lyke will be remembered for his dedication to education, his passion for music, and, most importantly, his unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, knowledge, and cherished memories that will forever be held dear by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral mass for John will be held Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 12:00 PM at St. James Catholic Church, 22800 Aldine Westfield Road, Spring, TX 77373. Following the funeral mass will be a committal service from 2:15 PM to 2:50 PM at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038.
