

Marlene was born in Victoria de las Tunas, Cuba, to Walter and Nury Rey. In 1967, at the age of 13, she and her family emigrated to the United States. Marlene spent the rest of her life in Philadelphia. She attended Holy Child grade school in the Logan section of Philadelphia, graduated from Little Flower High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree, Magna Cum Laude, from LaSalle University. She went on to have a successful career of social service, culminating as an Investigator for the Office of Civil Rights, Department of Health and Human Services for 25 years.
Marlene was a devout Christian with a strong faith in God. She was a member of Iglesia Evangelica Menonita de Oracion y Adoracion and recently completed a pilgrimage to Israel. She was a creative, social person with an infectious laugh who enjoyed writing, music and gardening. Marlene valued family and friends and dedicated her life to helping others.
Marlene was pre-deceased by her daughter, Raisa Lizardi, in 2007. She is survived by husband Federico Maldonado Sr., her son, Federico Maldonado Jr., her sister, Grisel Rey Palmer, her nephews, Jason and wife Danielle, Walter and Raymond and her great-nephew and great-nieces, Maxwell, Abigail and Lucy Palmer. She is also survived by many cousins.
Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Sunday, February 4, 2018, from 1-4pm at Lamb Funeral Home, Huntingdon Valley. Services will be held on Monday, February 5, 2018, at Lamb Funeral Home, with a viewing from 10:30am-11:30am, followed by her funeral service at 11:30am. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Langhorne, PA. In Lieu of Flowers, donations in Marlene’s memory may be made to Raisa’s Ray of Hope, P.O. Box 40173, Philadelphia, PA 19106, a charity Marlene started with her family in memory of her daughter to empower others to make a positive impact in the lives of children and young adults.
