Emily Jean Carroll

Emily Jean Carroll, 88 of Huntington passed away on Monday, February 17, 2020 at Heritage Pointe of Warren. Jean was a 1949 graduate of Coldwater High School and later graduated in 1974 from Purdue University with an associate’s degree. She had published three books, writing fiction and nonfiction which were published in magazines such as Woman’s Day, Woman’s World, The Lookout, The Christian and others. She enjoyed arts, crafts and sewing. She was a board member of the Mental Health Association for many years where she held many offices during her time on the board. Jean also owned and operated an antique shop for several years. She was born on July 28, 1931 in Quincy, Michigan, the daughter of Mahlon and Arlene (Barlow) Downer. Jean was united in marriage to Larry D. Carroll on September 23, 1950 in Coldwater, Michigan. Larry preceded her in death on August 6, 2009. Survivors include a son: Jay Carroll of Fort Wayne; a daughter: Jill DeHaven of Warren; two brothers: Jerry Downer of Coldwater, Michigan; Raymond Downer of Pekin, Ill; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister: Patricia Downer, a brother: Loren Downer and a son-in-law: Jeff DeHaven. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 from 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, Indiana. Interment will be at the Lancaster Cemetery at a later date.
