Obituary of Howard L. Smith

Howard L. Smith, 90 of Huntington passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Heritage Pointe of Huntington. Howard was a 1948 graduate of Huntington High School. He had attended Huntington College. Howard served his country in the United States Marine Corp. His career as a State Trooper began on December 16, 1953 and spanned over 30 years. He was District Commander in Area II in Allen County, District 22.He loved traveling, camping, photography and gardening as well as going to garage sales, bargain hunting and he also enjoyed cats. Howard was the family “Cream Puff” chef. He loved his family, he and Geri were inseparable. He continued to keep up with friends and family. Howard was born on November 29, 1929 in Petoskey, Michigan, the son of Andrew and Era Pearl (Harrington) Smith. He was united in marriage to Phyllis “Geri” Saufley on October 11, 1953 in Marion, Indiana. Geri preceded him in death on September 28, 1996. Survivors include a daughter: Patti Smith of Fort Wayne. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Helen N. Smith and Lavie F. Giddens. Visitation was held on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street in Huntington from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm with funeral service to follow at 3:00 pm with Rev. Brooks L. Fetters officiating. Interment was at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery Memorial donations can be made out to Visiting Nurse and Hospice or Huntington County Humane Society in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
