I am so very sorry for your loss. I knew Joe as a classmate in Stamford. He was one of the kindest and most positive people I’ve ever known. I hope his memory can be a comfort to his family.

I worked with Joe for a few years at the VA until he retired. He was a good boss. My sympathies are with his family in their time of grief. RIP Joe, you will not be forgotten.

My condolences to the Grey family. Joe was one of the first to welcome me to the VA Roudebush family. He was instrumental in helping me acclimate and introducing me to both IT and medical center staff. He never hesitated to share his vast experience and knowledge, along with his rather humorous opinions when asked. Joe especially loved his family and spoke of them often. I still recall the dejected look on his face one morning at work; when I asked what was wrong, he said he could no longer compete with Charles in gaming. I’ve never laughed so hard. We did some rock and roll stuff over the years, and I’ll forever be grateful for his expertise, camaraderie, and friendship. You’ll be missed, my friend.

He had great vision and wanted everyone to succeed and be the best they coukd be. Joe and I may have clicked a little bit because we are both New Yorkers and Steve Stoner used to shake his head at the two of us, point his finger and say, “you two, in my office!!!!!!”.  Folks thought he was a pain sometimes because they didn’t understand his visionary passion.  A couple of things he called out (years before they happened) came to pass just like he said they would.  Joe was a good man, and accountable to those around him and expected the same of others.  One of my favorite sayings from Joe had no words at all and it related to any subject that was sour, he would turn his head and pretend to spit with the sound effects.  We both had some pretty good laughs before and after that gesture.  In our younger years I talked Joe into playing paintball with the group and he later called me a few nice words for both shooting him a couple times and talking him into coming.  Joe would brag on Charles and Lillie.  He certainly loved and was so proud of both of you and I am grateful to have known him.

He was truly an incredible person. I’ll never forget meeting him and having a very loud disagreement early on—yet shortly after, he chose me to be his deputy CIO. That speaks volumes about the kind of leader he was. He gave me countless opportunities and became a mentor I deeply admired. We shared so many lunches, talking about everything from his pride in his son, Charles (and he had every right to brag!) to paving blacktops. He loved his dogs and often laughed about Lillie letting them off the hook during training. He looked forward to spending more time on his boat, and Lillie—the soft-hearted one—always kept him grounded. He meant so much to me, and I will always be grateful for the impact he had on my life.
