Ann Gertrude Smith, 82, died peacefully on June 6, 2017 at her home in West Hyannisport, MA. Ann was born in Lowell, MA on January 27, 1935 to Sarah Conway Harrington and John E. Harrington. She was a proud graduate of Keith Hall in Lowell and then attended the Catherine Laboure School of Nursing in South Boston where she trained as a Registered Nurse. Once her children were grown, Ann enrolled at Lesley University, where she achieved her lifelong dream of receiving a Bachelor’s degree.
As an RN, Ann spent her entire 45-year career working at St. John’s Hospital in Lowell (later known as Saints Memorial Hospital) where she changed nursing roles every five years to learn new things and take on new challenges. Ann was an early champion of the concept of Day Surgery and was instrumental in creating that now busy unit.
Ann married the late Charles Augustus Smith in Lowell on November 11, 1957 and raised her family in Chelmsford, MA. She was the mother of Maura Smith of Boston, MA; Kevin Smith of Northampton, MA; and Brian Smith and his wife Kristin of Oak Bluffs, MA. She was the sister of the late John E. Harrington, Jr., a former State Senator from Lowell, MA. She was grandmother to Gillian Smith of Braintree, MA; Siobhan Malaguti, and her husband Brandon, of Dartmouth, MA; Liam Smith, U.S. Air Force Airman First Class, of Harwich, MA; and Alice Smith of Oak Bluffs, MA. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ann was a born storyteller and poet, a loyal friend and cousin, and a ball of energy even into her 80s. But her greatest accomplishment was an extraordinarily happy marriage to the love of her life, Charlie. Since Ann and Charlie were inseparable for over 60 years, the family plans to celebrate their lives at a joint memorial service, to be held in Lowell in the near future.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the March of Dimes or the Jimmy Fund—two organizations that greatly benefitted the Smith family.
Arrangements under the direction of Doane Beal & Ames, Hyannis, MA.
