He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, the whole world listened. He was driven by hard work and a deep love for his family. His will in the face of many challenges and tragedies proved that he was a man of formidable strength who never shied away from a fight. With a baseball cap on his head, a dog by his side, a cold beer in his hand, and some good old country music on the radio, he was a one-in-a-trillion kind of soul.
Born at Cape Cod Hospital as the third of seven children, he grew up in Orleans with his family. He had a love for all sports, especially baseball. As a member of the Nauset team and also an avid Red Sox fan, he was a frequent Fenway flyer. He was one of the lucky few to sit in the Monster seats and enjoy a game with his wife and children. As a man who kept his emotions under wraps, it was an experience he would never forget.
After graduating high school, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in London during the Vietnam War, working for the fire department on base. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in June of 1969 at the rank of SGT.
With masterful attention to detail, he worked as a yard foreman in the lumber yard at Mid-Cape Home Centers for multiple locations for 46 years. When his lungs began to decline and he was no longer a spring chicken, he still managed to show off his skills as the grumpy guy at the gate at the Orleans location, impressing everyone with his meticulous knowledge.
He was predeceased by his parents, Merilyn Isabel (Fulcher) Reynolds and Minot Shaw Reynolds Sr., his son Todd, his sister “Auntie” Rae, and Minot “Little Joe.” He is survived by his longtime wife, Anne (Chilson); his son Matthew; his daughter Brie; and his grandson Luke. He is also survived by his brothers John, Robert, Ronald and his wife Carol (Noll), and William, as well as several nieces and nephews.
As a former active military member, he will be laid to rest at the National Cemetery in Bourne. As an avid hater of the cold, he will have an honor guard ceremony later this spring. The date and time will be published at a later time. Anyone wishing to donate in Charlie’s name is encouraged to donate to the Brewster VFW Post 9917, located at 989 Freeman’s Way, Brewster.
Dad, these last few years were some of the hardest, but you never lost your gusto for life. I am saddened that you will not be able to see Luke grow up, but I know you’ll be smiling down at him always, keeping him safe. You were only Papa for a few short years, but you were always a Papa at heart. I will never forget the Chuckie chuckle, the years Matt and I struggled to take your boots off at the end of a long, hard workday, and taking turns trying to steer your truck. I promise one day I will learn to drive stick.
To Charles “Papa” Reynolds: we love you, we miss you, and we salute you.
