

WEST BARNSTABLE
Edward F. Johnson passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Pavilion in Hyannis at the age of 96. He was a lifelong resident of West Barnstable and had become a patient at the Pavilion in May 2014. Edward was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Velma (Hodgkins) Johnson. He was also predeceased by his 3 sisters: Bertha Atwood, Dorothy Jordan, and Esther Kurra.
Edward was born at home in West Barnstable on May 18, 1918. He graduated from Barnstable High School in 1938 and from Stockbridge at UMass Amherst in 1940. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps having entered into service in March 1942 with a honorable discharge in January 1946.
He was a self employed carpenter until his retirement in 1975. He enjoyed gardening, sports, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was very generous and loved to give friends and family members vegetables from the huge garden he had each summer.
He was a member of the Finnish-American Society of Cape Cod and of the West Parish Congregational Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen M. Wirtanen and her husband Allan of Cummaquid, and his son, Peter E. Johnson and his wife Jane of Cotuit. He is survived by 6 grandsons: Eric Wirtanen, Andrew Wirtanen, Christopher Johnson and his wife Carmen, Timothy Johnson, Steven Johnson and his fiance Mary, and Noah Johnson.
He also leaves a great granddaughter Gia, and great grandson Willem. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Phyllis Boardman and brother-in-law Vinton T. Hodgkins, Jr. as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
At the request of the family, a graveside service will be held at a later date.
