Edwin A. Carter of Bonita Springs, Florida and Hyannis, died at his home in Hyannis on June 5, 2011. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on January 15, 1931. Win leaves his wife, Dana; his four daughters, Linda Kucera, Grace Zales and Pamela Miller, all of California, and Laura Groo of Maryland; eleven grandchildren, one great grandchild, and two sisters, Nancy Edebo and Linda Norton of California. Win was predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey Carter Foster.
Win spent his summers as a youth at the family home in Wianno where he first developed his passion for the ocean and sailing. He served in the US Navy as a Quartermaster and was a graduate of Brown University. After graduation, he began a career in the insurance business and later worked as a licensed yacht captain. His love of travel was evident by trips in his VW camper with Mexico as a favored winter destination. From the early 1970’s to the early 1990’s, Win lived full-time on his boat(s), Lou Lou, traveling between Cape Cod and Florida. He was active in the sailing community, racing for many years in the Figawi (where he was noted one year for having the only all-girl crew). He was an early member of the Band of Angels. Win served on various race committees in Hyannis, Miami and Key West.
After moving ashore, Win and Dana enjoyed sailing and cruising with family and friends on OPB (other peoples’ boats). Win successfully transitioned from sailor to gardener, becoming a Master Garlic Grower.
A gathering of family and friends to share sea tales and cocktails is being planned for a later date.
