Emily was born and raised in Freehold, NJ. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, John T. Canty of Somerville, MA. Emily and John raised their family in Somerville on Warner Street for more than 35 years before moving to their dream retirement home on Buttermilk Bay.
Emily leaves behind by her eldest son, Joseph Canty and his wife Susan of Lynnfield, her daughter, Lorraine Dunnett and her husband Bruce of Centerville, daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Cullinan) Canty of Nahant, her sister-in-law, Eileen Layton of Peabody and her special nieces Peggy Dwyer and Patty Allen with their families as well as many other wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins.
Emily was also a loving mother to her youngest son, Michael T. Canty (predeceased) and was the last surviving sibling of her 7 brothers and sisters: Herbert, Margery, Mary, Alice, Charles and Helen.
In addition to being a devoted wife, aunt, sister and mother, Emily was the proud grandmother of Mary Barth and her husband Brian of Centerville, Matthew Canty and his wife Amanda of Salem, Colleen Canty of Lynnfield, and Jake and Briana Canty of Nahant. Her great-grandson, Nicholas Barth was the light of her life in her last few years.
Faith, family and friends were so important in her devout Catholic life. Everyone that knew Emily was touched by her kind soul and motherly ways and she will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers for Emily, she would have loved the gesture to be “paid forward” by visiting the elderly and homebound. Donations to the Adult Supportive Day (ADS) Program of Barnstable, 825 Falmouth Road, Hyannis, MA 02601 can also be made in Emily’s memory.
