Howard Barnes Monroe III passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Howard, or as everyone knew him as, Howie, was a Cape Cod native who was raised in Osterville, Massachusetts. He later moved to Marstons Mills, where he would spend his years devoted to his family, friends, and work.
Howie is predeceased by his loving mother, Kathryn Monroe and father, Howard Barnes Monroe Jr, of Osterville and his beloved brother, Robert “Bobby” Monroe, of Texas City. He is survived by his three children Brian Monroe of Marstons Mills, Kimberly Taylor and son-in-law Eric Taylor of Centerville, and Stephanie Bentley and son-in-law James Bentley of Forestdale, along with his grandchildren Bryson, Garrett, Sierra, and Parker.
Howie grew up in Osterville with his siblings Bobby, Joanne, Mark, Marie, Michael, and Jon. He developed meaningful relationships and lasting memories with each one. He was a sports enthusiast and excelled in hockey, baseball, and soccer, becoming captain of the Barnstable High School soccer team and playing for Stonehill College.
After his years at Stonehill, Howie was a landscaper for Lew-Mac and then worked as a fisherman in Florida. Eventually, he returned home to become a plumber and purchased Hinckley Plumbing & Heating. His business became a testament to his integrity and devotion to his customers, who became his lifelong friends.
Howie dedicated his life to his children, teaching them the importance of humility, kindness, and appreciating the joy of small things. He stressed the values of education, responsibility, and helping those in need. He quietly donated to band trips, helped his neighbors, and coached sports, all the while wearing those signature work boots.
In his later years, he enjoyed fish Fridays with his mom, watching the Bruins, and spending Sundays with the Taylors and Bentleys. He cherished his grandchildren, playing sports with them in the backyard, hanging their art around the house, and in true Cape Cod fashion, introducing them all to their first live lobster.
He will be sorely missed by his family, including his nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, brother-in-laws Bob Wastrom, Peter Thomas and Craig Danziger, sister-in-laws Fran Monroe and Colleen Danziger, along with Maureen Monroe, and his beloved uncle, Walter Lewis. We are all so profoundly sad with his passing but feel eternally grateful for his presence in our lives.
A private memorial will be held for Howie in the summer.
