BARNSTABLE - Jean Stewart Hilton passed away on Saturday, October 9th after a period of failing health. Born in Boston on July 4th, 1924 to Dr. Roy Bryson Stewart and Marjorie (Ross) Stewart, she was raised in Brighton and Barnstable Village. Jean attended Boston Schools and graduated from Brighton High School, Colby-Sawyer College, and Katherine Gibbs School.

Upon graduation, she worked for Polaroid and Beechcraft Aviation. She was employed by the Town of Needham Planning Board for many years.

Jean was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Harry M. Hilton, her parents and brother Roy B. Stewart Jr (Buddy). She is survived by brothers Irving R Stewart and Robert D. Stewart of Barnstable, and her children: Susan Cowmeadow (Richard), Frederic Hilton (Judy), Stephen Hilton, Deborah Rogers (Walter) and 10 grandchildren: Andrew (Hobbs), James and Conor (Hilton), Samantha, Owen & Carly (Hilton) and Sarah, Emerson, Alexandra & Hannah (Rogers).

Loving travel, Jean commenced an overseas voyage for an extended trip to Europe in 1951 with two friends from Barnstable. She and Harry married shortly after her return. Later in their marriage they continued to explore many destinations in Europe, the Caribbean and the Americas.

Residents of Needham for many years, Jean & Harry maintained lasting friendships and were active in various civic activities, the Congregational Church of Needham, tennis and various social & charitable organizations. After a life of summers in Barnstable, they established year-round residency in Barnstable, where Jean was active with the Sturgis Library, Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary, and other organizations and events of the village. More recently, she moved to Heatherwood in Yarmouth Port while maintaining & frequently visiting her Barnstable cottage by the beach.

Jean delighted in being with people, new and old friends and loved learning all about their lives. She found particular joy in all of her grandchildren and in 4th of July (her birthday) celebrations, especially the Barnstable Village Parade.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, October 15th at 1:00pm followed by visitation from 1:30 to 3:30pm at Doane Beal and Ames, 160 West Main St, Hyannis. Interment will be held at a later date at Cummaquid Cemetery.

Susan, Fred, Steve, and Debbie,

Just wanted to let you all know what a special friendship your mom, Jean (and the whole Stewart family), had with my mother, Mary Lou. Mom always had a good story to tell us about her escapades with Jean, Buddy, Irving, and Robby starting as teenagers during the summers in Barnstable. Those good times continued throughout their adults lives. The friendships they made have now continued to their children and grandchildren. Theirs were lives well lived full of love for family and friends alike. What a wonderful legacy to leave behind. It is my hope that it will continue for many more generations.

With our deepest sympathy - Cindy and Bob Lister

We share our lives, our memories, friendships, and our grief. And we share our love for one another and although we cannot always be together in this realm we will always be together with our eternal bond of family and friends.

Dear Jean. Hers was a life well lived - loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and treasured friend. The sadness of losing her is softened by knowing that she and Harry are together again.
With much love,
