A proud Marine veteran, John served from 1954 to 1957 in the Korean War. He graduated from American International College and began his career as a guidance counselor. His work took him to Brazil and later back to Massachusetts, where he had also served as a police officer in Holyoke and Falmouth.
John eventually made Cape Cod his home, working as a guidance counselor in Falmouth until retirement. . He is survived by his sister Shirley Shingles Shevlin, his cousins Bruce O’Keefe of Weatherford Texas, Jean Gallager of Virginia Beach, VA and his many ‘nieces and nephews’. He deeply loved his sister Shirley and admired his brother in law Eddie throughout his life. In retirement, he enjoyed the beach, Cape Cod life, and visiting his favorite local restaurants.
Known for his warm smile and genuine interest in others, John touched countless lives as a Marine, counselor, officer, neighbor, and friend. John will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and the many lives he touched.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 30, 2026 at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 76 Wianno Ave., Osterville. Burial will take place at the MA National Cemetery at a later date.
