Katherine Mary (Sweeney) Verkade

Katherine Mary (Sweeney) Verkade, 76, of Marstons Mills, MA passed away unexpectedly surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Cape Cod Hospital. She was the loving and devoted wife of 56 years of marriage to Charles Verkade.

Kathy was born in Boston, MA the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Katherine (Hayes) Sweeney, and sister of the late Mary Hamblin. She grew up in Hyde Park and was a graduate of St. Catherine’s School. Kathy and Charley settled In Marstons Mills, MA in 1963 where they raised their four children.

Kathy was dedicated to caring for her family; in her children’s earlier years she especially enjoyed family camping trips. She had a special fondness for playing games and was noted for her mastery of Trivial Pursuit.

For 30 years, Kathy worked as a Library Assistant in Marstons Mills where she shared her love of books and reading.

In addition to her husband Charley, Kathy leaves behind four loving children: daughter Dawn (Michael) Hennessy of Ireland and sons Eric (Melissa) Verkade of Kittery, ME; David Verkade of Seattle, WA and Marc (Bill Nelson) Verkade of Barnstable, MA; her sister Carol Sweeney of Jacksonville, FL; brothers Thomas Sweeney of Jacksonville, FL and Robert Sweeney of Attleboro, MA. She is also leaves behind her three adored grandchildren; Brian, Tess and Matt Hennessy.

Family and friends will gather Saturday, May 11th from 10 am to 1:30 pm at Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main Street, Hyannis, MA. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 2:00 pm.
