Max’s military career started in 1950 when he joined the Civil Air Patrol, and in 1953 he joined the United States Navy Reserve. In late December 1954 he decided to join the United States Air Force. In 1955 he was stationed at Shiroi Air Base, Chiba Prefecture, Japan with the 6020th Air Base Squadron. While stationed here, he met his wife, Aki, and was married on June 24, 1957 and a year later, their daughter, Karen, was born. In 1959, Max was assigned to Walker Air Force Base, Roswell, New Mexico, where son William was born. In September 1960, Max was transferred to 331st Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Big Springs, Texas. It has been a tradition at Thanksgiving to get Max to tell his family what was in the briefcase he had attached to himself during this tour, and he never gave it up! His next assignment was May 1963 with the 551st Air Police Squadron at Otis Air Force Base. This is where Max’s son, Richard, was born. In March 1967, Max was assigned to the 37th Security Police Squadron, an Phu Cat Air Base, Vietnam. Max was here for one year, assigned to Cobra Flight and was a commander of an armored personnel carrier. After being in Vietnam, he was assigned back to Otis with the same duties as before, and his son, David, was born in 1970. Max’s next tour brought his family to Bangor, Maine, assigned at Bangor International Airport as Superintendent of Security Police. While in Maine, Max served as a Security Advisor to the Maine Air National Guard. In August 1974, Max moved on to Hancock Field, Syracuse, New York for duties as a Superintendent of security police. While in New York, on June 30, 1975 Max retired as a Master Sergeant, his goal for from first enlisting. He has said “even though there are two grades above Master Sergeant, when I enlisted Master Sergeant was the highest grade.”
After Max’s retirement was employed by Richard A. Bourne Co., Auctioneers as a foreman for many years.
Max loved his family and enjoyed seeing his grand and great grandchildren. He was a lover of Western movies and had a knack for fixing things, although sometimes a fix was a bit unconventional! Max loved to say “If it's good enough for Uncle Sam, it's good enough for me!”
Max’s family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Assisted Living, Caring Hospice, Family First Caregivers and the Hyannis Fire Department for their compassion and care for their “Papa”. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Hyannis Fire Department.
