Richard M. Surmach of Hyannis (formerly of Stoneham, MA) died peacefully on Monday, September 5th. Richard was born in Brooklyn, New York and Brooklyn was permanently engraved in his heart. He was a graduate of Rutgers University, held a Masters from Fairleigh Dickinson University and Advanced Language Certifications from Harvard University extension program. He was the son of the late Edward and Catherine (Randazzo) Surmach of New York. He also leaves behind a sister Marie (Surmach) Murphy of North Carolina.
Richard was the beloved husband of 48 years to Lucy (DiNitto) Surmach and the devoted father of his beloved son Michael also of Hyannis.
Richard was the loving uncle of Jay DeAngelis of Falmouth, MA and Tina (DiNitto) Caro of Medfield, MA. Richard felt blessed to have had the proximity of his great- nieces and nephews, Alexandra, Andrew and Jonny DeAngelis and Morgan and Nick Caro. It kept him heart at heart with their stories and life events.
Richard taught foreign languages at Burlington High School for over 30 years. In retirement, he taught German and Italian at the Barnstable Senior Center. He often stated “these students were his best students ever!”
Richard loved spending time with his family and good friends. He had a love of learning and travel. Most of all, he loved playing chess with Michael and challenging him to many “political” debates.
Richard will live forever in our hearts. Please, remember him with a special memory, a kind thought and a smile.
Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:30am on Saturday September 17, 2022 at Doane Beal and Ames, 160 West Main Street, Hyannis followed by a graveside service at St Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
