Rufus Raymond Russ peacefully transitioned, surrounded by his family, on Friday, December 26, 2025, in Hyannis, Massachusetts. He was 84 years old. Rufus was the devoted husband of 64 years to his beloved wife, Betty J. Russ.
Rufus was born on December 31, 1940, in Gifford, Florida, to the late Rufus Russ and Eula Mae. From an early age, he found joy in simple pleasures - playing sports, picking fruit from the family tree, and singing with loved ones. A natural athlete, he was a well-known football player in his youth. As he grew older, he worked alongside his father, learning landscaping, carpentry, farming, and handyman skills that would serve him throughout his life.
Blessed with a powerful and distinctive voice, Rufus was also a gifted gospel singer. As a teenager, he was a member of The Sons of Joy gospel group, traveling throughout Florida and performing alongside other well-known gospel artists, including Sam Cooke. Music was not just a talent for Rufus - it was a calling.
After marrying Betty, Rufus moved to Cape Cod, where they made their home in Hyannis, Massachusetts. He worked faithfully for many years as a machine operator and candlemaker at the Colonial Candle Factory. In addition, he proudly owned and operated a landscaping business for more than 30 years, earning a reputation for excellence, precision, and dedication.
Rufus was a founding member of Zion Union Church, where he served faithfully for more than 50 years as a devoted deacon and choir member. At home, he could often be heard singing along to The Mighty Clouds of Joy. Alongside his wife Betty and longtime friend Dee Wright, Rufus formed the beloved Zion Union Trio, sharing their ministry throughout Massachusetts. His voice brought comfort and inspiration, especially when he sang “Precious Lord” and “Grace & Mercy.”
Rufus loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and perfecting his craft as a landscaper. His home on General Patton Drive was known for one of the most beautifully curated lawns in Hyannis. He often worked well into the evening while Betty lovingly urged him to come inside. Best friends and spirited debate partners, Rufus and Betty shared a love filled with laughter, music, and devotion.
Rufus cherished his home and family and never forgot his Florida roots. He looked forward to yearly road trips to Vero Beach to visit his sisters and brother. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was often caught slipping a ten- or twenty-dollar bill into their hands with a knowing smile. True to a close-knit neighborhood spirit, he offered advice, repaired bikes and toys, and kept a watchful eye on the block.
Rufus is survived by his daughter, Katrina Russ Scott (Michael) of Union, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Anthony Allen Russ of Hyannis, Massachusetts; Joslyn Lee Russ of Panama City, Florida; Tacara Rose Russ and Skyla Russ of Union, New Jersey; and five great-grandchildren, Dwayne Elliott, Sa’Rai Elliott, Genesis Soto, Adolfo Soto, Jr., and Amya Russ. He is also survived by Sammy Donalson (like a son) and his wife Sherrie of Vero Beach, FL and by his sisters, Lucille Russ Buckner and Clara Trawick Jackson, both of Vero Beach, Florida.
Rufus was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty J. Russ; his son, Rufus Russ III; and his grandson, Darrell Russ.
