Edith “Edie” May Fisher went home to Jesus on July 22, 2019 at the age of 92 at Stratford Commons Memory Care in Overland Park, KS, were she had resided for the past year. Prior to this, she was a life-long Kansas City area resident with the last 70 years in Independence, MO.
Edie was born to Charles W. Calhoon and Ethel L. Stagg Calhoon on November 19, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri and was one of 7 children. As young girls she and her older sister Ethel helped support their family during the Great Depression by hand-carrying and delivering clothes throughout the Westport/Kansas City area that their mother had hand-washed & pressed. After delivering the clothes, the girls would sell bottles of pop out of a wagon to factory and industrial workers on their way back home and all the money they earned went towards supporting the family. When she was old enough, she worked in various machine shops as everything from a press operator to a welder.
She married at an early age and had two sons Eugene Paul, Kenneth Wayne. As a mother, she maintained a Christian household, making sure the boys were involved in church, piano lessons, Boy Scouts (and was a Den Mother for years), PTA, youth groups, Sunday school including, being a Sunday School teacher herself and was involved in whatever else the boys did. During this same time, she also helped raised her youngest brother Cal after her parents died at a younger age.
Her young family owned a wire shop which she worked in everyday and once the boys were old enough, so did they. She later took outside jobs as well doing everything from building plane engines during the war to manufacturing & assembling computer components for military aircraft, to supervising the Clean Room for electronics for AT&T, from which she retired in 1995.
She loved to listen to Christian music, attend Bible Studies, sew, read, bird watch, camp, hike and collect rocks and has a significant library of Christian reading.
As she got a little older and the boys were grown, two of her favorite hobbies were travelling and genealogy. In her travels, she went all over the country including Hawaii, Alaska (multiple times), drove the Al-Can Highway to Alaska and back and just about every other state in the union. She also traveled the world going to Australia, New Zealand and Israel on three occasions.
She had a real passion for family history and traveled the country researching records and leads and eventually traced verifiable family lines back to 1649, including the countries of origin, their travels to the US, including current day family members.
Edie joins her family in Heaven including her parents Charles & Ethel, her husband L. Ray “Bud” Fisher, and her siblings Charles “Chuck” Calhoon, Carl Calhoon, Wilma “Billie” Calhoon Schellenger (John), Roland Calhoon (Edna), Howard “Cal” Calhoon and grand-daughter Ronda McKinney.
