Jean was born February 15, 1933, in Lambs Creek, Pennsylvania to the late Hosea Jordan and Frances May (Johnson) Wolfrom.
Jean proudly joined the United States Navy after graduating from high school in 1951. She was stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes, where she served her country during the Korean War. After nearly two years of service, she married Robert H. Hammond in Corning, New York, and together they welcomed their son, Robert Hosea, in 1953, followed by their daughter, Susanne Marie, in 1957.
While raising her children, Jean worked as a licensed cosmetologist and devoted homemaker, creating a home filled with warmth, care, and laughter. She later retired in 1994 from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in Washington, D.C., where she was known as a friendly and welcoming presence during her years as a receptionist.
Following retirement, Jean moved to the Kansas City area to be near her children and grandchildren. There, she became affectionately known as “Granny” to neighbors, friends, and family — a name that reflected the love and comfort she brought to so many lives.
Jean embraced life with kindness, humor, and compassion. She was an avid reader, a fantastic cook, and a devoted lover of animals. Throughout her life, she rescued numerous stray cats and cared deeply for every creature she encountered. Her gentle spirit was perhaps best reflected in the injured wren she lovingly cared for as a pet for six years.
Nothing brought Jean greater pride or happiness than her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with family and had a gift for making others feel welcomed, loved, and cared for. Her wonderful sense of humor remained with her until the very end, leaving lasting smiles and treasured memories for all who knew her.
Jean will be remembered for her warmth, compassion, and unwavering love for family. Her life was one of quiet generosity and enduring grace, and her memory will forever be held close in the hearts of those who loved her.
Jean is survived by her children Robert (Beth) Hammond and Susanne (Jim Barker) Hammond. Her grandchildren Jennifer (Joe), Andrea, Samantha, Chase (Kate), Jeff (Jennifer) and Renee. Great grandchildren Bradley, Jack, Maggie, Mary and Eddie and a cousin Judy Nitsche.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at Newcomer's Noland Road Chapel, 509 S Noland Rd, Independence, Missouri 64050, US, on May 23, 2026, at 2:00 pm with a Memorial Gathering to follow.
